"The Joneses" ....as in keeping up with them

There is a new movie being filmed right here in Milton with Demi Moore and David Duchovny. It's going to be called "The Joneses" (or so they say right now) Anyway, I was at the gym this morning (yes, me at a gym...miracle:-)) and a lady in the class knew loads about it. Her
friends have rented their house in The Manor neighborhood (it's about 2 mins round the corner from us) for $6000 a DAY for a month while they are filming there (the houses in The Manor are between 1-5million dollar homes, so $6000 is probably not as great as it sounds - still, I wouldn't be saying no!)
Maybe not the exact house but this is one of the homes there....just to give you an idea:-)
Apparently, they are filming a big party scene there tonight (but the neighborhood is gated so BUMMER...) Anyway, Andrew and Daniel saw a big car crash scene being filmed a couple of days ago too.....will be cool to see the finished movie!!

Traditions...

This must be one of the dumbest American traditions.......here it usually happens among High School students towards the end of the school year, but our neighbor got toilet papered this weekend and it took hours to clean the worst of it up......I say dumb as it's the kids who make the mess but the poor family have to clean it all up.....I need to move before my kids are old enough to join in on this:-)

Trunk or Treat

Every year we go to a Trunk or Treat at the Hunter's Christmas Tree Farm. We just had it on Saturday night and it was a lot of fun...The kids ate way too much sugar and have been hyper all weekend - joy:-) I forgot my camera (here's when Andrew moans about how much it cost and what's the point if we never take it anywhere) but here are some fun pics that other people have sent me...

New gadget..

I got a new gadget for the camera last week - it's a polarizing filter and it's pretty amazing when you get it just right, though I think getting it just right is going to take a little practice! Pretty cool though. We went for a walk round the neighborhood before church on Sunday and tried it out. First picture without and the next one with the filter....

I love how the colors just jump out - you can see it right away looking through the lens when you turn the filter just right...(yes,..... I get a little too excited about dumb stuff!)

This was taken in front of our neighbors house and it was about midday. Cool to see the moon still there....but colors are amazing to me. I swear my eyes don't see color this good naturally:-)

Andrew's thoughts for the day.....

I just had a lovely day with the family at the children's Fall (Autumn) Carnival.

Whilst the various rides, music (replete with scary dance leading DJ's) and bouncy castles were a wonderful diversion the most interesting sight to behold was the scores of extremely "involved" parents marveling at the most inconsequential goings on of their little brats. There was even a Dad who appeared be a card carrying member of the paparazzi with (I kid you not) a 2 foot long camera lens behaving as if he'd just come across Brittany Spears staggering out of a bar with Tom Cruise - instead we were witnessing his offspring come down a slide only slightly longer than his lens.

I must confess that I had lens envy and that I was disappointed that Victoria forgot our 6 fps (that's frames per second) all singing and dancing camera but the spectacle was cause for reflection.

Is all this involving and fussing a good thing for our future leaders?

I remember, fondly, as kids a day at the park to mean being dropped there for the entire day and having my big brother and sister as my sole guardians. They must have been all of 8 and 11. Whilst maybe reckless in our day and age these days left to fend for ourselves were like an amazing adventure - with our two cousins we would pretend that we were, "The Famous Five", the stars of Enid Blytons classic kids books and would get up to all kinds of misadventures. I still have night terrors however from my big sisters tales of the man eating cabbages in our garden or that World War 3 is/was imminent with every passing airplane (Alex would tell me to take cover when planes would pass).

One of my best memories as a young boy that makes me still laugh thinking about it dates back to the ripe young age of 5 or 6 whilst we lived in the middle of nowhere in the beautiful southern part of England. We were descended upon by some distant relatives from Australia - "Syd and Elsie" and their amazingly smart son, Duncan, who must have been in his early teens. Duncan, much to Alex's disappointment, was forced into our gang but we soon realized he was quite the asset.

One day we visited the local dump for one of our many "invention projects" and Duncan's interest was piqued by an old abandoned, broken-down car. To cut a long story short, Duncan, with the help of the clan managed to get the car started and our excitement was overflowing. I vividly remember jumping on the back bumper after our push got it started and off we went down the country lane without a parent in sight. Oh what fun and what a life-long memory!

A recent article I read in the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122307823788704053.html) discussed us parents and some of the rationale behind our smothering. To quote, "today's young parents were the "latch-key" kids of the 1970s and 1980s, reared by hands-off parents who were among the least restrictive in generations...when their kids were born, this generation went the other direction...taking on the job of protecting them from all the dangers they saw around them". The article also stated that we have similar tastes in music and clothes and 75% of college freshmen in one study said they, "almost always took their parents' advice".

There are obvious positive outcomes to all of this "parenting" but I wonder if we are taking it too far? Is it really necessary to have our kids on an ever quickening treadmill, ferrying them from one activity to the next and to this or that game practice just to be sure that they are well rounded and feel loved and can thrive in this ever competitive world?

I can't help but think that these latch key kids of the 70's must also be quite well rounded, innovative, creative thinking, team orientated, entrepreneurial, risk taking, self-starting individuals who are going to do well come what may (myself of course included! :)

I am interested to read your thoughts on the topic...

Kids....

My kids are always coming out with funny things - a couple of days ago, Daniel, Jordan and I were having one of 'those' discussions where I had to explain some of the facts of life. Jordan listened with a funny smirk on his face and then he said "Mom, I have never had such an inappropriate conversation with you before" ??!!?? Funny boy!

Favorite Quote of the Weekend....

OK so there could be more than one....but the minute I heard this quote I loved it -
"Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others, cannot keep it from themselves" James Barry
Really, really, really great thought...

Girl's birthdays....

OK so it is a couple of weeks since Amelia's birthday, but only one since Abbie's birthday....so not too bad:-) Anyway, Amelia turned 3 this year....I know I can't believe it has gone by so quickly. She is my baby but she is a big grown up girl now! We went to Watercolor for her birthday long weekend so you've seen all those pics below but here are a few others....
She has just realised that these presents are for her:-)
A "big girl" bike. We spent one afternoon in the cul-de-sac and she had it all figured out. Now she asks (and asks and asks and asks) to ride bikes every day:-)
The ice cream cake (tradition in our house) but it had to be blue as blue is her favorite color. I asked her why not pink as she obviously loves pink too and she told me it is Abbie's favorite color.....do you think there could be sharing issues somewhere in there?!?
Blowing out the candle - we had a 'singing' candle and so we had to light and blow out a few times (just til we were sure there were enough spit germs all over the cake!)
I think she enjoyed it:-)

OK so onto Abbie's birthday - and she had a birthday long weekend too (the boys think this is totally unfair and are protesting for whole birthday weekends when it's their next birthday!!). Her birthday was on a Saturday but we decided that she should have a party this year as she has never had one so we had a party for her on Friday afternoon......GIRL party!! There is a cute new place called Sweet and Sassy that has opened up not far from us and basically it is this kid 'spa' 'nails' 'hair' place. Anyway, you'll get the idea as you see the pictures. She had 15 girls come and it was VERY fun (and loud)!!
Getting her hair and 'makeup' done:-)
OK so none of the girls look too happy in the shot but really everyone was having fun (honest!!)

All the girls are done - they got to 'dress up' too. For all you England folk that is not just the way kids turn up to a birthday party over here:-)

They all got to walk down the catwalk - and good big sister that she is - Abbie took Amelia down with her!
We all learned some funky dance moves.....(yes I joined in too - this was a girl event, like I said!!)
Cake and presents afterwards (yes it's ice cream cake too...) and that is Jordan right behind me - the boys didn't want to miss out on cake so came for this part! Anyway, it was lots of fun - perfect 7 yr old girl birthday party. Great memory!

I have a "Follower"

OOOoooohh I am impressed that I have my first follower - I love you:-) And it is cool to have that red dot all the way over in Melbourne:-) I am feeling the love!

Nature 'n' stuff

Just a few 'artistic' pics from our trip to Florida....
Funny how 'artistic' you get when you have a good camera....don't know if I am trying to justify the expense to myself or if it's just more enjoyable because the pictures turn out better:-)
Whatever it is - hope you enjoy! This was a night shot and really difficult - I am sure someone who had more of a clue what they were doing could have done it better but still pretty cool!
Same spot at night but somehow got more light in the picture (don't ask - I have no idea how or what was going on?!)
I love all the walkways to the beach...
This is a few miles down the road at Rosemary beach...it's beautiful down there...

Cool butterfly....
Pelicans - I tried getting them as they dove into the water to get the fish but it was tricky....maybe next time!

Standing on the beach looking back at some of the Watercolor houses...
Daniel actually took this one - don't know if you can make out all the dragonfly's in the sky. They are there to eat all the bugging flies at this time of year!
